What is a QR Code?

Frequently Asked Questions
What is QR code error correction?
QR codes have built-in error correction that allows them to be scanned even if part of the code is damaged or obscured. There are four levels: L (7% recovery), M (15%), Q (25%), and H (30%). Higher levels increase the code size. Use H if you plan to print the QR code where it might get dirty.
How much data can a QR code hold?
A QR code can hold up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 7,089 numeric characters at the lowest error correction level. For most URLs this is more than enough.
Can I customise the color of a QR code?
Yes. You can set any foreground and background color. Ensure there is enough contrast for reliable scanning — dark foreground on a light background works best.
Are QR codes free to use?
Yes. The QR code standard (ISO 18004) is open, and QR codes are free to generate and use for any purpose without licensing fees.
What is the best size to print a QR code?
For reliable scanning, print QR codes at a minimum of 2 x 2 cm (about 0.8 x 0.8 inches). The scanning distance roughly equals 10 times the code size.
