What is a cron expression?
A cron expression is a string with five fields separated by spaces representing a schedule: minute hour day-of-month month day-of-week. Each field can be a specific value, a range (1-5), a step (*/15 = every 15), or a wildcard (*). Cron is used in Linux/Unix systems, CI/CD pipelines, cloud functions (AWS Lambda, GCP Cloud Scheduler), and virtually any scheduled task system.
Common examples
0 9 * * 1-5 runs at 9:00 AM Monday through Friday. */15 * * * * runs every 15 minutes. 0 0 1 * * runs at midnight on the first of every month.
What does * mean in cron?
An asterisk (*) means "every" — every minute, every hour, every day, etc. It is a wildcard that matches any value for that field.
What is the difference between 0 and 7 for day of week?
Both 0 and 7 represent Sunday in most cron implementations. Monday is 1, Tuesday is 2, ... Saturday is 6. Some systems only accept 0-6; others accept 0-7.
