Free Online Barcode Generator

This free barcode generator creates barcodes in the most common 1D formats including Code 128 (the most widely used general-purpose barcode), EAN-13 and EAN-8 (used on retail products worldwide), UPC-A (North American retail), ITF-14 (shipping and logistics), and Code 39 (industrial and government). All barcodes can be downloaded as PNG images or scalable SVG files.

Which barcode format should I use?

Code 128 is the best choice for general-purpose use — it can encode all 128 ASCII characters and is compact. EAN-13 and UPC-A are required for retail products sold in stores. ITF-14 is used on outer cartons and shipping packaging. Code 39 is common in industrial, automotive, and government applications.

What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?

Both are used for retail products. UPC-A (12 digits) is primarily used in North America. EAN-13 (13 digits) is the international standard used worldwide — a UPC-A code is a subset of EAN-13 (simply prefixed with a 0).

Can I use these barcodes commercially?

For internal use (inventory, tracking), yes. For retail products (EAN/UPC), the barcode number must be registered with GS1 (gs1.org) to ensure uniqueness. This generator creates the visual barcode — you are responsible for the number allocation.

Is PNG or SVG better for printing?

SVG is better for printing as it is a vector format that scales to any size without pixelation. Use PNG when you need a raster image for digital use or applications that don't support SVG.
